Another Bank holiday means another outing for the Collins family. This time it was to Bath where the Romans...well took a bath hence the name. Along for the ride was my mother who arrived on Thursday and will be here for about 10 days. Her trip overlaps with my sister's trip here. We planned it that way so they could watch kids while Michael and I take a weekend to Amsterdam, but more on that next weekend.
This is the Abbey in Bath built in the 15th century, this is the third church built on the site. On the sides of it there are ladders that angels are climbing up to get to Heaven, some are falling.
Here we are in the main bath area. It is about 5 feet deep all the way around. We asked if anyone had accidently fallen in and they told us that is does occasionally happen and when it does they take them to get dried off, let the person wash up and the dry their clothes for them and they return home the way they came. A couple of years ago an American teenager was showing off and dove into the bath. He was given a lecture on how dirty and unsanitary the water actually is and was sent home dripping wet.
Here is a view of the main area. There is a natural spring underneath that warms the water.
Of course, in a place like this you have to have characters walking around mingling with the tourists. Here is my mom explaining she is from a far away place called Kansas which they had never heard of (you know, since they are from ancient Roman times and all).
Overlooking the baths.
Street performers are in a world of their own. I have noticed they are either really good, or really bad. This guy was really good, he knew how to work the crowd and get a laugh and he juggled sharp knives on an unicycle. Doesn't get much better than that.
More street performers, Adeline liked them.
The view of Bath from our double decker tour
On the tour we drove past this children's park which all the kids on the bus (not just our kids) started screaming "We want to go there!" So we hopped off the bus and spent the next hour playing at the park.
We had a good day, it was long and we were all tired when we got home.
Is it my imagination, or, has Aidan gotten a lot taller. In the family picture at the bath house, his head is above Betty's shoulder.
